Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team was swept by Gettysburg on Sunday, March 29 at Clothier Field. The Bullets won the opener by a 7-4 score and earned a 10-3 victory in the nightcap. The Garnet were playing their first games on their new field.
The opener began with a pitching duel between Gettysburg's Lindsey Treanor and Swarthmore freshman Emily Bownan. The Bullets scored one run in the first and fifth innings on wild pitches to take a 2-0 lead, but the Garnet fought back by plating two runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame to pull even. Junior
Clara Obstfeld walked in senior
Chelsea Matzko with the bases loaded to make it 2-2.
Gettysburg, however, got a timely hit and also took advantage of a Garnet error to build a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Steph Zengel blasted a three-run homer over the fence in left to make it 5-2 in the sixth before Melissa Tighe belted a two-run single up the middle in the seventh with two outs. Wendy Folfas, who initially struck out swinging, was able to reach first on a throwing error by Garnet catcher
Emma Madarasz before scoring two plays later.
Despite the setback, the Garnet did not go down without a fight and attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Obstfeld got the inning going with a single to left, and freshman
Mary Olesnavich and Madarasz each drew walks later in the frame to load the bases with two outs. Senior
Laurie Sellars followed with an RBI single to center for her third hit of the game to score Obstfeld and bring the winning run to the plate. Matzko, however, grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Lindsey Treanor went the distance in the circle for Gettysburg and picked up the victory despite allowing four runs on seven hits. She recorded five strikeouts and issued 10 walks. Bowman was charged with the loss for Swarthmore after giving up five runs, including four earned, along with four hits over 5.1 frames. She fanned six Bullet hitters and now has a team-leading 24 strikeouts this spring.
Gettysburg burst out to a 10-0 lead in the nightcap and never looked back. The Bullets most notably capitalized on a pair of errors to plate six runs in the top of the second, which included a bases-clearing double by Jamie Abbell to make it 5-0 at the time. Swarthmore responded by scoring three times in the sixth, but the initial deficit was too much to overcome.
Aileen Reilly made two separate appearances in the circle and picked up the victory for Gettysburg by allowing five runs over seven frames. She was not charged with allowing any runs while striking out six and issuing three walks. Swarthmore freshman
Frankie Ponziani was tagged with the loss after giving up five hits and six runs in 1.1 innings of work. Only one of the runs she surrendered was earned.
Swarthmore (4-6, CC 0-2) returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 when it hosts McDaniel for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
