Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – An eight-game win streak came to a halt for the Swarthmore College baseball team (12-4, CC 0-2) on Sunday, March 29 as the visiting Dickinson Red Devils (8-9, CC 2-0) spoiled the Garnet's conference-opening doubleheader. Swarthmore fell 12-6 in game one and lost 8-3 in the second half of the twinbill.
Miscues plagued the Garnet defense throughout the afternoon with the team committing five errors in each game.
In game one, Dickinson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and never relinquished its advantage. Swarthmore answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame when
Ryan Burnett drove in
Wesley Fishburn with one of his three hits on the day.
The Red Devils increased their margin with a five-run fifth inning and added five more in the seventh and eighth. The Garnet were able to put four runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth to shrink their deficit to 12-6, but it was ultimately too little, too late.
Swarthmore started strong in the second game and earned its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the first. Fishburn led off with a single and stole second before an RBI base hit by
John Lim brought him home.
Strong pitching by sophomore
Brian Gibbs, including eight strikeouts in four innings, helped maintain the lead, but a rocky fifth inning swung the momentum in Dickinson's favor. The Red Devils capitalized on four hits and three errors to pull ahead 6-1. Although Swarthmore chipped away at the lead with a run in the bottom of the frame, Dickinson could not be caught and picked up its first conference wins on the season.
The team looks to bounce back when its hosts archrival Haverford on Tuesday, March 31 for a Centennial Conference game at 3:30 p.m.
