SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team (12-2) held on for a narrow, 1-0 win over Centenary College (N.J.) for its eighth consecutive victory on Wednesday, March 25. It was the team's second one-run win in as many days with the Garnet besting Widener, 3-2, on March 24.
Starting pitcher Henry Cappel improved to 2-1 after holding the Cyclones scoreless with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Max Kassan was also effective in three innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
The Garnet put the only run of the game on the board in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Wesley Fishburn hit a leadoff single and stole second to put himself in scoring position with no outs. Ryan Burnett drove in Fishburn with one of his three hits on the day and advanced to second on John Lim's single, but was ultimately stranded.
Centenary had an opportunity to answer in the second and had runners on second and third with no outs to put Cappel in a jam. The sophomore righty escaped the inning without surrendering a run as the Cyclones, who stranded 12 over the course of the game, left the bases loaded.
The visitors threatened to score in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out, but two consecutive force outs at the plate allowed the Garnet to hold a 1-0 lead.
The Garnet's streak again appeared to be in jeopardy in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and a full count for Centenary's Ryan Caparoni, who has already recorded four home runs this season. Junior closer Nathan Booth came through in the clutch, however, with a strikeout and picked up his fifth save of the campaign.
Swarthmore opens Centennial Conference play when it hosts Dickinson for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28. The games are scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
