Box Score CHESTER, Pa. – A low-scoring contest went in favor of the Swarthmore College baseball team (11-2) as the visiting Garnet picked up a 3-2 win over Widener University on Tuesday, March 24.
Five different pitchers took the mound for Swarthmore and allowed a combined four hits and one earned run in the game. Sophomore
Aidan Miller was credited with his third win of the season and junior
Nathan Booth earned his fourth save after retiring the side in order in the ninth inning.
The Garnet fell behind early in the bottom of the first as the homestanding Pride took advantage of two hits and an error to put two runs on the board. Swarthmore, however, answered quickly with two runs of its own in the second to tie the game.
David Wolfson hit a two-out double to left field and scored when freshman
Cal Barnett-Mayotte singled to left center. A fielding error allowed
Wesley Fishburn to reach base and put Barnett-Mayotte on third.
Ryan Burnett's single drove in a run and evened things at two apiece.
Runs were hard to come by and neither team recorded multiple hits in an inning after the second frame. Swarthmore had an opportunity when Barnett Mayotte put himself in scoring position with a one-out double in the fourth, but the freshman was ultimately stranded.
With the game still tied entering the seventh, the first two Garnet batters were retired and it appeared the score would remain at 2-2 entering the bottom half.
Scoop Ruxin, however, singled down the left field line and went to second after
Roy Walker reached on an error. A walk loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought Ruxin around for the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the eighth, Widener had a chance to tie the game with a man on third and only one out. The runner, however, was picked off by freshman pitcher
Jackson Ramey and the Garnet escaped the inning with its lead intact.
Swarthmore resumes non-conference play when it hosts Centenary (N.J.) on Wednesday, March 25 at 3:30 p.m.
