Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Despite getting two man-up goals from freshman
Matt Johnson and three overall, the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team fell to Ursinus by a 13-5 score in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools on Saturday, March 21 at Clothier Field. The Garnet had their four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
After freshman
Cam Marsh set up
Ian Lukaszewicz for his 13th marker of the season to tie the score at 1-all with 6:58 left in the first, Ursinus (5-1, CC 1-0) responded with four straight goals to take control of the game. Senior
Braeden DeWan found the back of the net in the waning seconds of the opening quarter to end the Bears' scoring run, but the visitors responded by outscoring the Garnet 5-1 in the second quarter to make it 10-3 at the break.
Swarthmore scored the lone goal of the third on a man-up opportunity and appeared to gain more momentum when an Ursinus player was penalized between quarters for using an illegal stick. Ursinus, however, got a key stop on the defensive end and then got a man-down goal from a charging Jake Weber at the 14:06 mark to go ahead 11-4. Following two more tallies by the visitors, a man-up goal by Lukaszewicz produced the final outcome.
Brian Neff made seven saves in the cage to pick up the victory for Ursinus, while Swarthmore's
Cole Fox suffered just his first loss as a starter despite turning away 11 shots. Freshman
Jack Ryan was also a bright spot for the Garnet defensively, finishing the game with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ursinus outshot Swarthmore 46-22, including 24-12 in shots on target, and had a narrow 28-27 edge in ground balls.
Swarthmore (4-2, CC 0-1) returns to action when it visits Muhlenberg on Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m.
