Men’s Tennis Competes at ITA Regional Tournament

Harrison Lands reached the semifinals of his draw at the ITA Regionals over the weekend.

COMPLETE RESULTS

Fredericksburg, Va. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team opened its fall season with the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament held this weekend at the University of Mary Washington.

Freshman Ari Cepelewicz won his first round match in the championship singles draw, defeating Catholic University's Juan Lorido 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.  Cepelewicz later teamed up with classmate Mark Fallati in championship doubles play to earn another first round victory, edging out Joel Lankford and Matt Seifert of Carnegie Mellon by a score of 8-6.

Sophomore Thomas Vernier and senior Harrison Lands both reached the semifinals of their respective draws.  Vernier convincingly defeated Mike Cannon of Elizabethtown 6-4, 6-2, before dominating Michael Dodd of Christopher Newport 6-2, 6-2.  Lands had a decisive win against Albright's Matt Muoio 6-1, 6-2 and then prevailed over Caleb Kramer of Ursinus 6-1, 7-6(5).

Junior Matt Hirsh, sophomore John Larkin, and freshmen Blake Oetting and Yosuke Higashi also competed in the tournament, but fell to opponents in championship singles play. Freshmen Bryan Cheun and Michael Song paired with Higashi and Oetting, respectively, but were also defeated in their championship doubles matches.

The Garnet will now use the offseason to prepare for conference competition, which resumes in the spring.
