Box Score 2 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team split with opponents Lebanon Valley College and host Elizabethtown College in the opening day of the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic from Thompson Gymnasium. The Garnet lost in straight sets to the Dutchwomen before overcoming a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Blue Jays 3-2.
Senior
Chastity Hopkins swung a career-high 18 kills to lead Swarthmore's (6-3) attack against Elizabethtown (7-7). Junior
Sam DuBois picked up her fourth double-double with 53 assists - a mark matching her career-best - and 11 digs. Freshmen
Sarah Wallace and
Bridget Scott put away 15 kills a piece and Wallace claimed her sixth double-double of the season with 19 digs. Junior
Madison Heppe led a group of five in double-digit digs with her season-high 23 in the five-set match.
The Garnet took the first set 25-21 before dropping two straight (22-25, 21-25) to the Blue Jays. The fourth set saw nine ties before Swarthmore broke away with kills from Wallace and junior
Anastasia White-Torruellas, taking the set 25-21. In the deciding set, Wallace led the attack with four kills as the Garnet won the match with a 15-10 fifth set score.
Earlier on Friday, Lebanon Valley (10-2) swept the Garnet in straight sets after scores of 20-25, 17-25 and 18-25 in the Dutchwomen's favor.
Senior
Kate Amodei and Heppe set the defense with a combined 15 digs, while freshmen
Alice Liu and
Bridget Scott each brought down two block assists.
DuBois set the attack with 22 assists, while Wallace swung nine kills and Hopkins finished with seven in the three-set match. Freshman
Olivia Leventhal served four aces in the loss.
The Dutchwomen were led by sophomore Greta Weidemoyer with 18 kills, senior Kasey Musselman with 37 assists and junior Allie Garrett with 22 digs.
The first set was evenly matched with 11 ties and nine lead changes. Swarthmore took its last lead, 18-17, in the set on a kill from Wallace, before Lebanon Valley closed out the set by a 25-20 score. The Dutchwomen held momentum in sets two and three for the victory.
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday, meeting SUNY New Paltz and York College at the Blue Jay Classic.
