Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team opened the 2014 campaign with a pair of victories at the Salisbury University Volleyball Opener. In the first match, the Garnet defeated Mount Aloysius College in straight sets and followed with a 3-1 victory over Clark University.
On Saturday, the Garnet will face the hosts Salisbury at 12:00 p.m. and conclude the season-opening tournament with Stevens Institute of Technology.
Match 1 vs. Mount Aloysius College (full box score coming soon)The Garnet needed just three sets to earn its first victory of the 2014 season over the Mounties of Mount Aloysius with set scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-14. Swarthmore (2-0) has won the season-opening match for the sixth consecutive year.
Junior
Madison Heppe and freshman
Sarah Wallace anchored the defense with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. At the net, senior
Chastity Hopkins shut down the Mounties offense with one solo block and two block assists; the Garnet finished with four total blocks. In three set match, freshman
Malia Scott assisted the defense with seven digs and one block assist.
Wallace completed her first career double-double with the addition of 13 kills to lead the Garnet attack. The freshman outside hitter also served up four aces in her collegiate debut. Hopkins recorded seven kills and freshman
Bridget Scott finished with six in the opening match. Junior setter
Sam DuBois collected 19 assists, two service aces, six digs and one block assist.
Match 2 vs. Clark UniversityAfter dropping the first set 19-25, the Garnet fought back to take a 3-1 victory over Clark University (0-2) with following set scores of 25-9, 25-19, 25-16.
Wallace showed her strength once again for the Garnet, finishing with a 17-dig, 15-kill double-double. She also added one solo block and two block assists to her stat line. DuBois registered her first double-double of the season with 18 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman
Olivia Leventhal added to the defense with 13 digs and two block assists. The outside hitter concluded her collegiate debut with seven kills in the victory over Cougars.
Scott recorded 10 kills for the Garnet offense and three block assists at the net for Swarthmore's third-highest point contributor in the match.
