CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Four different players drove in a run to lead Washington College to a 4-1 win over the Swarthmore College baseball team on Tuesday, Apr. 8 at the Athey Baseball Park.

The game began as a pitching duel between Swarthmore's Henry Cappel and Washington College's Dan Jarrell. After the Shoremen scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Garnet came back with the equalizer in the third on an RBI double by freshman Ryan Burnett.

Washington College (12-11, CC 3-4), however, capitalized on a pair of Swarthmore errors to plate two runs in the fifth and take a 3-1 lead. Junior Scott Matthews hit a sacrifice fly to put the hosts ahead before classmate Dennis Thomas knocked in the team's third run on an RBI single to center. The Shoremen added another insurance run in the eighth to cap the scoring and kept the Garnet off the board the rest of the way.

Jarrell earned the win for Washington College and improved his record to 3-2 by going the distance on the mound. He surrendered three hits and gave up just one run, which was earned, while striking out three and walking two. Cappell suffered the loss after giving up six hits and three runs, including one earned, in six innings of work. He also recorded nine strikeouts.

Swarthmore (13-10, CC 2-5) visits DeSales for a non-conference game tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
