Softball Falls to Green Terror

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Swarthmore College softball team (7-13, 0-6 CC) offense was silenced by the strong pitching staff of McDaniel College (13-9, 5-3 CC) as the Green Terror swept the Centennial Conference series with 8-0 wins in each game.

The Green Terror used bursts of offensive sparks in each game en route to the sweep. In game one, McDaniel recorded eight runs on nine hits in the third inning and concluded the day with a six-run fifth to finalize the game early. The Garnet bats were limited to just six hits in the twinbill as six different players recorded singles.  From the mound, McDaniel's Caroline Brehm recorded nine strikeouts in each game to notch her 10th and 11th victory of the season.

Junior Chelsea Matzko connected to center field in the first of the opener for Swarthmore's first base runner with one out. After a strikeout for the second out, senior Rose Pitkin plugged a ball through the left infield to put Matzko in scoring position, but both were left on base following the second strikeout of the inning. Swarthmore would get four base runners the rest of the game, but couldn't get them home.

With one out and the bases loaded, leading 1-0, McDaniel's Emily Sneeringer sent the ball over the fence for a grand slam. Starting pitcher freshman Jackie Pezzato (1-4) was replaced by senior Melissa O'Connor before the Green Terror capitalized with a two-run homer from Caitlin Justice.

In game two, the Garnet recorded three hits in the opening three innings – Pezzato, junior Emma Madarasz and senior Nicole Aaron – but other batters were rattled all day by junior pitcher Caroline Brehm of McDaniel.

McDaniel scored twice early before Sneeringer doubled to spark the offense to a six-run fifth inning to complete the sweep.

Senior pitcher Sarina Lowe (1-5) took the loss for Swarthmore in game two in four and two out innings pitched with three strikeouts, 13 hits and seven earned runs.

Up next, Swarthmore travels to Eastern University on Tuesday, April 8 for a non-conference twinbill with the Eagles. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
