Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team was swept by Gettysburg on Saturday, Apr. 5 at Kirchoff Field. The Bullets won the opener by a 5-1 score and earned a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
After taking an early lead, Gettysburg used a three-run fifth to pull away in the opener. Junior Mike Kielbasa pulled the ball down the left field line for a double that plated two and gave the Bullets a commanding 5-0 lead.
Swarthmore was able to get on the board in the top of the eighth by getting a solo home run from junior
Scoop Ruxin. But that was the last hit the Garnet would manage to get off of junior Eric Hungerford, who went the distance on the mound for the host school.
Hungford earned the victory on the mound and improved his ledger to a perfect 4-0 for Gettysburg. He only yielded three hits and one run, which was earned, while striking out six and issuing just one walk. Swarthmore junior
Luke Alventosa suffered just his first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1 after giving up nine hits and five runs that were all unearned. He struck out six and issued one free pass.
In the nightcap, Gettysburg opened the scoring during the bottom of the first and never surrendered the lead for the second straight game. Freshman Austin Davis came home on a wild pitch before a pair of RBI singles in the third put the Bullets up 3-0.
After Gettysburg (17-3, CC 3-0) took a 6-0 advantage by tallying another three runs in the sixth, Swarthmore attempted to rally and had several chances in the late innings to get on the board beginning when freshman
Wesley Fishburn singled and later stole third with two outs The shortstop, however, was stranded 90 feet away from home as freshman Rich Power struck out the next batter to get out of the jam.
The Garnet continued to fight in the last two frames, but they would leave two runners on base in the eighth as well as junior Greg Cox on third in the ninth. Sophomore reliever Luke Lawrence registered the Bullets' 13th strikeout of the game to clinch the six-run victory.
Power picked up the victory for Gettysburg and remained undefeated at 3-0 by throwing seven scoreless frames and allowing four hits. He also fanned 11 and issued only one walk. Freshman
Aidan Miller fell to 1-1 with the loss after giving up seven hits and six runs, which were all earned, while registering eight strikeouts.
Swarthmore (12-8, CC 1-3), which was swept in a doubleheader for just the first time this season, visits Dickinson for a twinbill tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m.
