Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Steven Matos-Torres went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Franklin & Marshall in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 26 at Clothier Field. The Diplomats, however, won the second game by a 3-0 score to earn the split.
Senior Rob Anderson began the opener with a solo home run to left to give the Diplomats a quick 1-0 advantage, but Swarthmore answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed again. Freshmen
Wesley Fishburn and Matos-Torres each drove in a run to spark the Garnet offense in the early going.
After the Diplomats plated another run in the fourth to create a 2-2 tie, Swarthmore once again responded in its bottom half of the same frame by scoring twice. Matos-Torres and junior
Zach Powell each scored on Diplomat errors to give the hosts a 4-2 cushion through four.
Swarthmore tacked on one run in the fifth and seventh frames to add insurance, as Matos-Torres and junior
Brian Kaissi each hit RBI singles the opposite way to right field to make it 6-2. The Garnet pitching staff then only surrendered one run the rest of the way to seal the win.
Freshman
Brian Gibbs picked up the win for Swarthmore and improved to 2-3 this spring after striking out eight and allowing three runs, which were all earned, and eight hits over eight frames. Senior
Matt Bertuch earned his third save after throwing a scoreless ninth. Franklin & Marshall junior Sean Cosgriff was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-5. He surrendered nine hits and five runs, including three earned, over six innings of work.
With senior Alex Guerra in full control on the mound, Franklin & Marshall (14-23, CC 6-12) took the nightcap by scoring once in the fourth and twice in the sixth. Luke Seib led the offense by belting an RBI double to start the scoring and driving in another run on a single to right to double the Diplomat advantage at the time. The final run came home on a bases-loaded walk issued to Sam Gladstone.
Guerra, a senior, went the distance to pick up the shutout victory for Franklin & Marshall and improved to 5-3. He gave up six hits and struck out three while not issuing a walk. Junior
Joe Warren took the loss and ended the season with a 1-2 ledger after giving up seven hits and three runs, including two earned, over six frames.
Swarthmore (18-17, CC 7-11) will wrap up its 2014 campaign when it visits Penn State Brandywine for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Apr. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
