Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Cody Ruben recorded three hits, including a walk-off single, to propel the Swarthmore College baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Ursinus in 11 innings on Tuesday, Apr. 22 at Clothier Field.
Swarthmore took a 7-3 lead into the last frame after scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by freshman
Ryan Burnett, who finished the game with three hits and three runs batted in. Ursinus (14-15, CC 6-9), however, changed its lineup and utilized four pinch hitters along with two pinch runners to score four times in the top of the ninth to eventually force extras after the Garnet left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame.
With sophomore
Oscar Leong in control on the mound, Swarthmore able to escape with a one-run victory in the 11th. Ruben provided the heroics with two outs by singling in junior
Zach Powell, who notched a hit earlier in the frame.
Leong earned the victory for Swarthmore by pitching two scoreless frames to close out the game. He did not allow a hit and fanned three to improve his ledger to 1-1 this season. Ursinus hurler Chris Ryder suffered the loss and dropped to 2-2 after yielding four hits and one run, which was earned, over 3.1 frames.
Swarthmore (17-15, CC 6-9) will look to keep its playoff hopes alive when it visits Ursinus on Friday, Apr. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
