Men's Lacrosse Suffers 9-3 Setback to Dickinson

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team dropped its fourth straight Centennial Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field  Dickinson College by a score of 9-3.

Senior attackman Jonathan Molloy netted a pair of goals for the Garnet (4-9, 1-5 CC), while junior attacker Ian Lukaszewicz scored one as junior attacker Andrew Preiser and freshman defender Eric Levin were credited with an assist on the day. Senior Jonathan Cohen played all 60 minutes in the cage, coming up with a season-high 15 saves on the 24 shots faced.

Dickinson (7-6, 4-2 CC) opened the contest scoring twice in the first and second quarter to jump ahead with a 4-0 lead. Swarthmore struggled from the get-go, pulling off just six shots in the first two frames until Molloy scored at the 3:23 mark of the second quarter on an extra-man opportunity for Swarthmore's first goal of the game. Both teams looked to add another goal as each side managed to take a shot, but none of the shots were able to find the back of the net as Dickinson held on to the 4-2 lead at the break.

The Red Devils started the second half with a goal at the 13:29 mark, thanks to a man-up opportunity, before scoring three more in a span of three minutes to jump ahead 8-1 with 5:11 to play. Swarthmore got on the board late in the third quarter after Preiser recovered a rebound off his own shot and fed the ball to Lukaszewicz for the easy chip-in goal.

Both teams continued to battle their way through the fourth and final quarter of the game until Darrel Hunter picked up a ground ball for the Swarthmore clear as Eric Levin connected with Molloy, who then netted the Garnet's third and final goal of the game as Swarthmore now trailed 8-3 with 13:16 to remaining in the game.

Dickinson quickly responded with a goal of its own three minutes later to fend off the Garnet's strong attack in the final minutes as the Red Devils clinched their fourth conference game of the year and improved to 7-6 overall.

Swarthmore out battled the Red Devils on ground balls, 31-26, but the real game-changer was on the 'X' as Dickinson won 11 of the 15 face-offs and outshot the Garnet 44-33.

Swarthmore will look to break the four conference skid when the Garnet return to action on the road Wednesday, April 23 in Chestertown, Md. as they take on Washington College for the 7 p.m. contest.
