Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Steven Matos-Torres went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice to propel the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 12-6 victory over McDaniel in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 19 at Clothier Field. The Green Terror won the opener by a 7-3 score to salvage the split.
McDaniel went ahead 3-1 in the nightcap by scoring three times in the top of the fifth, but Swarthmore exploded offensively in the bottom half of the same frame to seize an 8-3 lead.
John Lim started the rally with an RBI single through the left side and came home for the tying run on a Matos-Torres blast a hit up the middle with the bases loaded. Junior
Danny McMahon then plated senior
Nicko Burnett for the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left before
Trevor Shepherd and Greg Cox each drove in two runs by doubling and singling, respectively, with two outs.
After the Green Terror put one tally on the board in the top of the seventh to make it 8-4, Swarthmore had another big inning in the bottom half of the frame to pull away. Freshman
Ryan Burnett rocketed a two-run double to left and Lim singled through the right side to score the Garnet center fielder for insurance.
Senior
Matt Bertuch, who entered the game in the fifth inning, picked up the victory and improved to 5-3. He struck out one and allowed four hits in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Zach Kronick suffered the loss for McDaniel after being charged with five hits and five runs, including three earned, over 4.1 frames.
Swarthmore started the afternoon off hot by opening the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second of game one. Senior
Cody Ruben most notably hit a two-run single that sent home McMahon and sophomore
Oscar Leong.
McDaniel (14-15, CC 8-6), however, came alive offensively and scored twice in the second and once in the seventh to tie the game. Freshman Eric Grantland hit an infield single to make it 3-3. The Green Terror then pushed four runs across in the eighth, which most notably included a double by senior Joe Fiore that scored two.
The Garnet did not go down without a fight and sent the tying run to the plate by loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth. But after recording three consecutive singles courtesy of Lim,
Nicko Burnett and junior
Scoop Ruxin, McDaniel pitcher Andrew Monger fanned Leong to get out of the jam and end the game.
Monger, a senior, went the distance on the mound and moved ahead to 4-4 this spring despite giving up 14 hits and three runs that were all earned. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. Freshman
Brian Gibbs took the loss and dropped to 1-3 while yielding five hits and six runs, including one earned, in 7.1 frames. He also registered five strikeouts.
