Gettysburg Takes Two from Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team fell to Gettysburg College on Friday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Bullets took the twinbill with 8-2 and 8-0 scores.

In the opening game, the Bullets reached the scoreboard first with a run in the first inning, but Swarthmore capitalized on three errors in the top of the second to score two unearned runs to take the lead.

Senior Rose Pitkin went 2-for-3 and one walk as the Garnet finished with six hits. Junior Laurie Sellars cranked out a single to left field in the second for her fifth RBI of the season.

In a game with multiple miscues on each side, the Garnet took advantage in the second inning as senior Nicole Aaron reached on an error and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. A drawn walk from freshman Anna Jensen and another fielding error placed freshman Sara Planthaber on base. Sellars' single brought Aaron home and Jensen scored later on the play to give Swarthmore a 2-1 lead.

The Bullets responded next half inning on back-to-back fielding errors for three total runs before Swarthmore could escape the inning with a strikeout and catcher Emma Madarasz gunning down a runner attempting to steal second.

Swarthmore threatened in the fifth with bases loaded on one out after singles from sophomore Clara Obstfeld, junior Chelsea Matzko and Pitkin, but Bullets pitcher Michelle Fox forced a line out and fly out to end the inning.

The Bullets tacked on four more runs in the sixth to clinch an 8-2 victory.

In the nightcap, Swarthmore's bats struggled, managing just three hits in an 8-0 loss. Gettysburg struck early with a solo home run in the first followed by four runs in the second to set the momentum.

Senior Melissa O'Connor (7-8) took the loss in game one with five strikeouts, while freshman Jackie Pezzato (1-6) had the losing decision in the nightcap.

Swarthmore will look for conference victories next week at Haverford on Tuesday, April 22.
