SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Chelsea Matzko scattered a combined three hits and drove in a run, but it wasn't enough, as the Swarthmore College softball team dropped both ends of a twinbill to Dickinson on Saturday, Apr. 12 at Clothier Field. The Red Devils took game one by a 4-0 score before hanging on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Junior Emma Madarasz came home on a wild pitch to put the Garnet quickly ahead by a 1-0 score in the  bottom of the first of game two, but Dickinson came right back and answered with two runs in the top of the second. Katie Swade blasted a two-run double  to deep left that gave the Red Devils a 2-1 lead.

Dickinson (8-18, CC 4-8) added two more runs in the sixth and appeared to be in control, but the Garnet did not quit and stormed back in the bottom of the seventh. Batting with the bases loaded and two outs, Matzko singled to third base to plate Nicole Aaron and begin an attempted rally.

After Sara Planthaber came home on a wild pitch to bring the Garnet within one, Rose Pitkin kept the inning alive by drawing a walk to load the bases again. Sophomore Clara Obsfeld then came up and worked up a full count against senior hurler Chelsea Homa, but the shortstop was caught looking on a pitch that just caught the upper outside corner of the strikeout to end the game.

Dickinson's Homa earned the victory and improved her ledger to 7-7 after surrendering seven hits and three runs, including one earned, while striking out five and walking three. Swarthmore senior Melissa O'Connor suffered the loss and fell to 6-7. She yielded 11 hits and four runs, including two earned, and fanned two.

With Homa taking control in the circle, Dickinson burst out to a 4-0 lead in the opener by scoring three times in the second and once in the third. Sophomore Stacie Maring hit a two-run single to cap the scoring in the second frame before classmate Nicole Piet went yard to left center in the third.

Swarthmore had its chances to get on the board, beginning in the fourth when Matzko rocketed a double to deep left field. The Garnet would later have runners at second and third with only one out, but Homa got out of trouble by inducing a popout and fanning Planthaber.

The hosts also started off the seventh inning strong by getting a leadoff single up the middle from Nicole Aaron followed by a double to right by Planthaber to place a pair of runners in scoring position with nobody out. Swarthmore, however, could not get the timely hits it needed and eventually settled for the four-run loss.

Homa got her first of two victories in the circle by throwing her third shutout of the season for Dickinson. She allowed three hits and struck out six against while issuing only one walk. O'Connor was tagged with the loss after giving up eight hits and four runs, which were all earned, and striking out three.

Swarthmore (8-17, CC 0-8) continues Centennial Conference play on Tuesday, Apr. 15 when it hosts Washington College for a twinbill beginning at 3 p.m.
