Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Down 9-0 after two innings, freshman
Sara Planthaber and
Anna Jensen fueled a Swarthmore College softball team rallied with nine runs over four innings, tied the game in the sixth before winning it in the same frame, defeating Eastern University, 11-9 on Friday afternoon.
The win puts Swarthmore at 8-15 on the year while Eastern falls to 13-11 overall.
Planthaber went 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and two runs of her own as Jensen recorded three RBIs after going 1-for-3 on the day. Senior
Melissa O'Connor pitched five strong innings, shutting out Eastern on just five hits with three strikeouts.
Eastern took advantage of Swarthmore's gaps in the outfield in scoring three runs in the first before adding six more in the top of the second inning, but the Garnet started their comeback with three in the top of the third. After senior
Rose Pitkin singled up the middle to bring junior
Emma Madarasz home from third, Planthaber singled through the infield to bring junior
Chelsea Matzko and Pitkin home for the 9-3 score.
Planthaber stepped up to clean up the batting order in the top of the fifth and did just that as she knocked the ball over the right field wall for the three-run homer, her first career home run, to cut the deficit to just three runs.
The rally continued for the Garnet in the sixth frame. With two outs on the board, Planthaber singled towards left field to load the bases and sophomore
Clara Obstfeld later scored on a passed ball. Senior
Laurie Sellars then walked, loading the bases once again before Jensen belted the ball through the left side for the 3 RBI single to give Swarthmore its first lead of the game.
Pitcher
Melissa O'Connor continued her dominance on the mound for Swarthmore as she limited the Eagles to just two hits with three left on bases in the bottom of the sixth for the 10-9 lead. Swarthmore knew it needed additional runs and after the first two batters got on bases on a pair of singles, Matzko saw a rare opportunity to score as Eastern's catcher failed to hold the runners at bay and committed an unfathomable error, throwing towards the shortstop, as Matzsko quickly sped towards home plate for the easy score.
O'Connor closed out the game for her sixth win of the season after striking out the leading batter before forcing a pair of ground outs as Swarthmore rallied back from nine run deficit to earn its eighth win of the season.
The Garnet return to action on Saturday, April 12 hosting Centennial Conference foe Dickinson College from Clothier Field at 1:00 p.m.
