SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Nicko Burnett broke the school record for career runs batted in to power the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Washington College on Friday, Apr. 11 at Clothier Field.

The Shoremen scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but Swarthmore countered with three runs in the third and six in the fourth to seize the momentum. Nicko Burnett blasted a two-run single in the second frame to put the Garnet ahead 3-1 before sending the ball up the middle in the third inning to send home freshman Ryan Burnett for his record-breaking 101st career RBI.

After Nicko Burnett made history, junior Scoop Ruxin capped the scoring in the big inning for the Garnet by singling through the right side that plated John Lim. The Garnet ended the fourth with a commanding 9-1 advantage by taking full advantage of three Shoremen infield errors in the frame.

Washington College (12-12, CC 3-5) responded by scoring twice on three Garnet errors in the fifth, beginning with an RBI triple by Shane Matthews. The Garnet pitching staff, however, combined to throw four scoreless innings the rest of the way to allow the hosts to pull out the six-run victory.

Junior Luke Alventosa earned the victory for Swarthmore and improved his ledger to 3-1. He yielded five hits and three runs, including one earned, over six innings while striking out two. Sophomore Nathan Booth picked up his first save by throwing three scoreless frames of relief. He allowed one hit and fanned three. Washington College's Billy Griffin was tagged with the loss and dropped to 1-1 after giving up eight hits and nine runs, including four earned, over 3.2 innings.

Swarthmore (14-11, CC 3-5) visits Johns Hopkins for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12:30 p.m.
