SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior
Danny McMahon hit a walkoff single to propel the Swarthmore College baseball team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Eastern in 10 innings on Thursday, March 27 at Clothier Field. With the victory, the Garnet improved their record to 4-1 at home this season.
Freshman
Ryan Burnett got the 10th inning going by drawing a walk and was sacrificed over to second by classmate
Lucas Fernandez-Rocha. The right fielder advanced to third on a wild pitch thrown by sophomore reliever Ryan Ellison, who was attempting to intentionally walk senior
Nicko Burnett, and eventually scored the winning run in walkoff fashion on a blast up the middle by McMahon.
Eastern (2-12) started the game off strong by scoring twice in the first and once in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. But Swarthmore's
Aidan Miller teamed up with catcher Fernandez-Rocha to throw five straight shutout frames in which he did not allow a hit while fanning nine to allow the hosts to climb back into the game.
After sophomore
Oscar Leong and freshman
Wesley Fishburn recorded RBI singles in the fourth to begin a rally, junior
Brian Kaissi and Fernandez-Rocha each hit sacrifice flies in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to give the Garnet a 4-3 lead. Eastern forced extras on a Ryan McMenamin single in the top of the ninth before McMahon provided the heroics to close things out in the bottom of the 10th.
Senior
Matt Bertuch picked up the win for Swarthmore and improved to 2-2 after throwing a scoreless 10th inning for the Garnet and recording a strikeout. Ellison suffered the loss for Eastern despite yielding just one hit on the walkoff play.
Swarthmore (10-5), which has won five of its last six games, opens up Centennial Conference play at Dickinson on Saturday, March 29 at 12:30 p.m.
