Men’s Tennis Cruises to 9-0 Sweep of Kalamazoo

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Dominating from the beginning of the match, the Swarthmore College men's tennis team (4-5) cruised to a 9-0 sweep of Kalamazoo at home on Wednesday, March 26.

The Garnet opened with a clean sweep of doubles action, dropping only eight games in the three matches. Senior Anthony Collard and freshman Thomas Vernier picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Seniors Christian Carcione and Dan Park downed the No. 2 doubles team of Alex Faber and Branden Metzler by a score of 8-2, and juniors Harrison Lands and Irving Stone earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

Picking up his second win for the day and dropping only two games doing so, Collard defeated Metzler at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, senior Preston Poon fought to a comeback victory against Peter Rothstein, winning the second and third sets 6-3, 6-1 after dropping the first set, 3-6.

Freshman John Larkin battled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Mike Korn at No. 3 singles. Stone, Park, and Carcione each picked up their second wins for the day and completed the singles sweep as they cruised to straight-set victories at No. 4, 5, and 6, respectively.

Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, March 29 when it visits No. 5 Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Play will begin at 12:00 p.m.
