SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore John Lim drove in two runs and freshman Henry Cappel picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound in leading the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 3-2 win over Richard Stockton in the second game of a twinbill on Sunday, March 23 at Clothier Field. The Ospreys took the opener by a 2-1 margin to earn the split.

Richard Stockton (9-6) opened up the scoring in the second inning of the nightcap, but Swarthmore answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Batting with one out and two runners in scoring position, Lim singled up the middle to plate senior Cody Ruben and freshman Ryan Burnett. After Lim aggressively stole second, senior Nicko Burnett drove in the Garnet catcher for an insurance tally by doubling to the gap in left center.

The Ospreys attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, beginning on the first play when Brett Solomen reached on an error by a charging Ryan Burnett from right field. The junior scored one play later courtesy of a single up the middle by classmate Mark Jankowski to make it 3-2, but that was as close as they would come. Lim, the starting catcher for the Garnet, picked off Jankowski at first and Cappel ended the game by striking out the next two batters.

Cappel earned his first collegiate win and improved to 1-0 by hurling a complete game for Swarthmore. He yielded just three hits and two runs, including one earned, while striking out four and issuing just one walk. Richard Stockton's Jason Fox suffered the loss after giving up four hits and three runs, including two earned, in 2.1 innings of work.

The opener was a pitching duel in which neither team managed to record a hit for extra bases with freshman Brian Gibbs on the mound for Swarthmore and Ryan Adamski throwing for the Ospreys. Richard Stockton got on board in the top of the first, as sophomore Keith Tappert hit a leadoff single, stole two bases and scored on a groundout to Garnet shortstop Wesley Fishburn.

After Gibbs went five straight innings without giving up a run and leaving the bases empty, Swarthmore was able to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. Nicko Burnett reached on an infield error and was plated as the result of another defensive miscue to make it 1-1.

Richard Stockton, however, was able to take advantage of a Garnet error to plate what would be the winning run in the top of the second. Gibbs induced a potential double play by forcing Jankowski to hit a grounder right to him with one out and. The freshman pitcher got the runner heading for second, but the ensuing throw to first was off and allowed junior George Eisenhart to score. Closer Matt Poinsett then kept the Garnet off the board in the bottom of the seventh to give the Ospreys the narrow victory.

Adamski picked up the win for Richard Stockton after scattering five hits and only allowing one run which was unearned in six innings of work. Poinsett, a junior, earned a save by throwing a scoreless seventh. Swarthmore's Gibbs took the tough loss despite surrendering five hits and two runs, which were both earned. He fanned eight and issued only one walk.

Swarthmore (9-5), which had its next scheduled game at Widener postponed, will continue playing at Clothier Field when it hosts Eastern on Wednesday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
