Box Score
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team (2-4) fell to Drew University (3-3) by a 9-8 score. The Garnet scored twice and held the Rangers scoreless in the final frame, to stake it's comeback, but fell just short in a hard-fought non-conference game on a rainy Wednesday night from Clothier Field.
Junior
Ian Lukaszewicz posted four points with a hat-trick and an assist, while senior
Daniel Kowalyshyn tallied two goals and sophomore
Alex Scott collected three assists on the night. Senior
Jonathan Cohen played all 60 minutes in the cage and came up with seven saves in the 16 shots faced.
The Garnet trailed 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter when Lukaszewicz scored 56 seconds in the opening quarter. Both sides took shots but none ended up in the back of the net until the 1:30 mark when Kowalyshyn scored the second Garnet goal of the quarter from Scott to trail by one. Swarthmore quickly regained possession and set up several plays, but Drew's defense clamped down hard, preventing any potential shots as time winded down for the Rangers to pick up their third win of the year. The loss sent the Garnet to a 2-4 mark before conference play begins Saturday.
Drew wasted no time in the early minutes of the first period as they scored three unanswered goals and the Rangers' defense managed to keep Swarthmore off the board throughout the period, despite the five shots triggered.
As the game headed into the second period, junior
Chris Thomson connected with junior
Andrew Preiser to find the back of the net 54 seconds in to put the Garnet on the board. Less than three minutes later, Lukaszewicz managed to slip by two defenders to retrieve the feed from Scott and score past the goalkeeper's weak side for Swarthmore's second goal of the game.
After both teams traded a pair of goals, Preiser stepped up once again, scoring his second goal of the night at the 1:47 mark from Lukaszewicz to cut Swarthmore's deficit to one at the break.
The Rangers responded in the second half by scoring twice in the third period before Lukaszewicz cracked the scoreboard, scoring the Garnet's fifth, and his second goal of the night. Drew quickly added a pair of goals to jump ahead 9-5, before serving a penalty as Swarthmore took advantage of the extra-man opportunity successfully as Kowalyshyn scored unassisted at the 1:47 mark before the end of the third period.
Despite four man-up opportunities in the final period, Swarthmore couldn't penetrate through Drew's tight defense; netting just two goals on five shots in the period. Rangers' goalie Kyle Mariboe was strong down the stretch recording eight of his 12 saves in the second half.
As much as Drew dominated the first 30 minutes, the second half was more or less owned by the Garnet as they outshot the Rangers' 16-8 and collected 22 ground balls to Drew's 12 in the frame as the offense got kick started.
The Garnet looks to regain focus as they return to action with a tough road contest on Saturday against Ursinus College to open the Centennial Conference play. The first face off is set for 3:00 p.m.
