FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore catcher
John Lim drove in three runs and classmate
Joe Warren hurled a shutout to lift the Swarthmore College baseball team to a 5-0 shutout of Salve Regina in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 14 at PDC Field. The Seahawks rallied to win the opener by a 3-2 decision in eight innings to earn a split of the twinbill.
After Salve Regina's Frank Lemieux and Swarthmore's Warren battled through four scoreless innings in the nightcap, Lim broke the deadlock by hitting a one-out sacrifice fly to center that scored sophomore
Roy Walker to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead. Swarthmore then used a four-run sixth inning to pull away, as junior
Brian Kaissi singled in a run and Lim came through again with a two-run double to the power alley in right center.
Warren picked up the shutout win and improved to 1-0 by going the distance for Swarthmore. He only surrendered four hits, which were all singles, while striking out six and issuing just one walk. Salve Regina's Lemieux suffered the loss despite yielding only four hits and giving up one run which was earned over five frames.
The opener also started as a classic pitcher's dual between Swarthmore's
Luke Alventosa and Salve Regina's Cory Poplawski. Swarthmore was able to get on the board first when junior
Scoop Ruxin grounded out to the shortstop to score senior
Cody Ruben from third, but the Garnet defense was plagued with six errors in the game that allowed the Seahawks to rally. Freshman Hunter Sleeper first singled to left to plate junior Tim Harris for an unearned run and force extra innings.
In the eighth frame, Swarthmore regained the lead when Ruxin grounded out to second with the bases loaded that sent home junior pinch runner Greg Cox. Salve Regina, however, came back once again and took advantage of a Garnet defensive miscue to plate two unearned runs in walk-off fashion. Senior Tyler Colby successfully reached first and Sleeper and senior Nicholas Dell'Anno each scored to give the Seahawks the 3-2 win.
Senior Kevin Lambert earned the win for Salve Regina (8-2) by not allowing a hit over 2.1 innings of relief to move his record to 2-0. Swarthmore's
Oscar Leong suffered the tough loss despite not surrendering a hit and giving up two runs that were unearned. Alventosa also pitched 6.1 strong innings in which he struck out three and gave up just four hits.
Swarthmore (6-4) will return home to host Cairn on Tuesday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
