FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior
Nicko Burnett blasted his first home run of the season and sophomore
John Lim scattered a combined four hits in leading the Swarthmore College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, March 11 at PDC Field. Despite trailing in both games, the Garnet rallied from behind twice to win the opener by a 3-1 decision and the nightcap by a 10-5 score.
Eastern Nazarene (4-2), which entered the twinbill undefeated, scored first in the opener by picking up one run on two hits in the fourth. Senior Berroa tripled and scored on a wild pitch to put the Lions ahead.
But after going hitless through three innings and scoreless through four, the Garnet got on the board with two runs in the fifth frame. Senior
Cody Ruben began the inning with a single, and junior pinch runner
Gregory Cox was driven home on an RBI single from
Ryan Burnett. The freshman then stole second and scored the go-ahead run off a single by Lim.
The Garnet added to their lead in the sixth inning without having to record a hit. Leadoff hitter
Danny McMahon was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed over to second by junior
Trevor Shepherd on the next play. An infield error followed by a fielder's choice play with senior
Nick Constantino at the plate brought McMahon home and gave the game its final margin of 3-1.
Freshman
Brian Gibbs was strong in his first collegiate start for the Garnet and hurled a complete game on the mound. He allowed only four hits and one run while striking out five. Eastern Nazarene's David Manning was tagged with the loss after giving up five hits three runs, including two earned, over 5.1 frames.
After falling behind 3-0 through two innings in the nightcap, the Swarthmore offense came alive to score five runs in the fifth.
Nicko Burnett led off with a solo homer, and McMahon followed with a single before being brought home on a sacrifice fly from Cox. Ryan then Burnett put the Garnet ahead for good with a two-run double and came to the plat on an RBI single by Lim.
The seventh inning saw another offensive outburst from Swarthmore as the team scored four runs on five hits. Lim began the inning with a double and advanced to third after a single from junior
Scoop Ruxin.

Wesley Fishburn drove in one run apiece, and Cox's double plated two more insurance runs for the Garnet.
Junior
Matt Sharma was credited with the win for Swarthmore after allowing just three hits and two runs which were unearned in four innings of relief. Quentin Moore suffered the setback after being charged with five runs that were all earned over 4.2 frames.
Swarthmore (4-2) will return to action on Thursday, March 13 with another doubleheader against Skidmore. The first pitch will be thrown at 10:00 a.m.
