MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Another tough day at the plate for the Swarthmore College softball team (0-4) as the Garnet dropped games to Bemidji State University and Bridgewater College from the Grand Park Sports Complex.
Game 1
Bemidji State used 12 hits to power past Swarthmore College by a 7-1 score on Monday morning.
Swarthmore senior first baseman Rose Pitkin smashed the ball to center field for a triple, bringing senior Nicole Aaron around home in the top of the first for what would be the lone run for the Garnet.
Bemidji State responded with a one-out triple from Dupay. Yost brought her home with a single to center, knotting the score at 1-1 entering the second inning.
With two outs and a runner on first, Jessica Yost found the base on an infield error to extend the inning. Next at-bat Mikayla Osterman tripled to right center to bring home two runners. Osterman found home plate on a double from Lyndsey Peterson before a fly ball to left field closed the bottom of the third.
Bemidji recorded two extra base hits in the fifth inning to finalize all scoring at a 7-1 score.
Senior Sarina Lowe pitched five innings for the Garnet, recording five strikeouts and 11 hits. Sophomore Christen Boas Hayes allowed just one hit to close out the game.
Game 2
In the bottom of the second, with one out and two runners on base from walks, Swarthmore found themselves in a tight spot. A single from Lutz loaded the bases for Bridgewater State followed by a RBI single from Balcom for the first tally. Swarthmore defense squeezed the runner at third to grab the second out, but Jenkins' single to an open spot in right field brought two runners home before Swarthmore could close out the inning.
Swarthmore found momentum in the third with singles from senior Nicole Aaron and sophomore Clara Obstfeld before senior Chelsea Matzko crushed a two-out triple to right center to close the scoring deficit to 3-2.
Bridgewater rattled off four hits and three runs in the fourth inning to finalize all scoring.
Swarthmore continues to find it's first win in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 9:30 a.m. with Gordon College followed by Delaware Valley College.
