Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Eastern, 12-5

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team opened the 2014 campaign Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field with a 12-5 loss to Eastern University. 

Swarthmore (0-1) dropped its home-opener to Eastern (2-0) by a 12-5 score. The Eagles scored three times in each period to win its second consecutive game. 

Junior Chris Thomson tallied twice and picked up three groundballs for the Garnet, while senior Geli Carabases scooped up four groundballs and two caused turnovers in the effort. Playing between the pipes for the Garnet was senior Jonathan Cohen - he recorded 10 saves. 

The Garnet opened the scoring 40 seconds into the first frame as senior Daniel Kowalyshyn netted his first of the season. Eastern responded with six unanswered goals started by junior Grant Ferguson at 10:58 in the first followed by two from junior Eric Waibel for a 3-1 score after the first 15 minutes. Eastern continued it's streak into the second period at 9:36 on a goal from Dave Darling, while Ferguson and Waibel netted once more each before Swarthmore found it's offense. 

Entering the break, Eastern owned a 6-2 lead and a 19-6 shot advantage. From the faceoff circle, the Eagles had a slight 6-4 edge over the Garnet. 

Senior Jonathan Molloy scored a man-up goal on a pass from junior Grayson Roze at 12:08 in the third period to cut the scoring deficit to three. However, Eastern found momentum again at 8:49 as Ferguson netted his third of the game followed by two more goals from Tim Lamb and Darling, closing out the third with a 9-3 lead. 

Junior Ian Lukaszewicz and Thomson each netted in the final frame for the Garnet,  but Eastern's Ferguson picked up two more goals for a game-high five to lead the Eagles to victory. 

The Eagles split the scoring amongst five players and keeper Pat Groschan recorded six saves in the win. 

Swarthmore will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 hosting Drew University at 7:00 p.m.
