LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman
Andrew Steele swam on a record-breaking relay and nearly set a program standard individually to help lead the Swarthmore College men's swimming team to a fifth-place standing after the first day of the Centennial Conference Championships at Franklin & Marshall's Kunkel Aquatic Center on Friday, Feb. 21. The Garnet accumulated 115 points through five events.
Steele started the morning by finishing third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.62, which was just three one-hundredths of a second shy of the school record of 1:55.59 set by Mike Dudley in 2003. He ended the day by teaming up with freshman
Liam Fitzstevens, senior
Stan Le and senior
John Flaherty on the 400 medley relay squad which finished fifth in a school-record time of 3:29.94. The previous mark of 3:32.04 was established by Santiago Lombo, Sterling Satterfield, Sam Bullard-Sisken and Doug Gilchrist-Scott in 2009.
Other notable performances in individual events were made by Flaherty and Fitzstevens in the 200 IM. Flaherty placed fifth in 1:56.03, while Fitzstevens hit the wall 10th in 1:56.45.
Swarthmore will continue competing at the Centennial Conference Championships tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a.m.
