Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – With postseason implications on the line, the Swarthmore College men's soccer team played Haverford to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Clothier Field. The Fords scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to salvage the tie and eliminate the Garnet from Centennial Conference Tournament contention.
Swarthmore (9-6-3, CC 3-5-1) dominated the entire first half, outshooting Haverford by a commanding 6-0 margin, and took advantage of a free kick to score the first goal of the match. Junior
Alec McClean found the back of the net on a diving header in the 38th minute off a free kick taken by classmate
Wyatt McCall from outside the box.
Haverford (9-6-1, CC 4-4-1), however, regrouped at halftime and had multiple opportunities to net the equalizer in the second frame. After a header by Brady Seitz went wide on a corner kick, junior
Tyler Zon made an acrobatic save by redirecting a rocket attempted by the Ford forward to keep the Garnet ahead by a goal.
But with the final seconds ticking down, Haverford was able to net the equalizer to send the match to overtime. Will Corkery attempted a corner kick from the right side that was headed home through traffic by Seitz.
In the first extra session, Swarthmore had the first and best chance to net the golden goal just a few minutes into the frame when senior
Michael Stewart had the ball inside the box with one Ford defender to beat. The senior's shot, however, sailed wide right of the goal. After a shot by Colin Seitz off a corner kick was blocked and a free kick from midfield by McCall was intercepted through traffic by Miller, the teams headed to a second overtime.
Swarthmore had its chances in the final 10 minutes but eventually came up short. A corner kick in the final minute resulted in a Garnet foul, and a free kick awarded to the hosts with 2.2 seconds was unsuccessful. With the victory, the Fords clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament and Swarthmore was eliminated from the postseason.
Haverford's Miller turned away five shots to pick up the victory between the pipes, while Zon made four saves in the losing effort for the Garnet.
Swarthmore will now wait to see if its resume is strong enough for a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
