Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Freshman Skylar Clark netted his first career goal in the 103rd minute to propel Washington College to a 2-1 triumph on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Kibler Field.
The first half was tightly contested with Washington College (6-9-1, CC 1-6-1) holding a slight 4-3 edge in shot attempts. Swarthmore, however, got on the board first in the 15th minute. Sophomore
Billy Evers stole the ball on a Shoreman clear attempt and slipped a pass to junior
Wyatt McCall, who let it fly from 25 yards out to the lower left corner of the goal. Evers recorded his league-leading eighth assist on the play to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead which they carried into the break.
Shortly after Swarthmore (9-6-2, CC 3-5) nearly doubled its lead early in the second half on a header by junior
David Geschwind that was saved by goalkeeper Lin Robinson, Washington College was able to net the equalizer by taking advantage of its fourth corner kick of the night. Joseph Fili knotted the score at 1-all by receiving a cross from Dimitri Kaliakin and heading the ball to the upper left corner of the net.
Swarthmore regained control and nearly answered on a corner kick taken by McCall in the 77th minute, but a header by Geschwind was tipped over the crossbar at the last moment by Robinson to keep the teams deadlocked on the scoreboard. Although the Garnet dominated the last 20 minutes of play, the Shoremen defense held its ground and the teams headed to overtime all tied up at 1-1.
Both teams had their chances to net the golden goal in the extra sessions, beginning when Swarthmore sophomore
Ryan Meuth blasted a shot wide left of the goal shortly after another McCall corner kick. But After Keegan Fisher took a cross and rifled the ball wide of the net near the end of the first overtime, the Shoremen came back again in transition to put the match away in the 103rd minute. Chris Lewandowski rocketed a shot on a breakaway that was turned away by junior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon, and Clark potted the rebound for his first career goal.
Robinson of Washington College redirected four shots to pick up the victory, while Zon made four saves for the Garnet in the losing effort.
Swarthmore, which is now 3-2-2 in overtime matches this season, will put its postseason fate on the line when it hosts archrival Haverford to conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
