Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team finished Ursinus College (13-10, 1-6 CC) in straight sets (28-26, 25-16, 25-15) on Tuesday evening from Tarble Pavilion in the lone Centennial Conference match of the day. With the win, the Garnet holds an unblemished record at home and in the conference.
Swarthmore (16-4, 7-0 CC) had defensive coverage by junior
Madison Heppe on 23 digs, while freshman
Alice Liu recorded three blocks at the net. Freshman setter
Malia Scott finished the three-setter with 24 assists and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. On attack, freshmen
Bridget Scott and
Sarah Wallace swung 13 and 10 kills, respectively. In each set, the Garnet had kills from six players and digs from at lease five different players.
The first set saw 18 tied scores and eight lead changes as the teams went point-for-point nearly the entire set. For the finish, Ursinus went ahead 23-22 before a Garnet timeout and kill from Scott. Two kills from the Bears' Taylor McCartney and another Scott's fifth of the set put the score at 25-24, Ursinus, before Wallace took a pass from junior setter
Sam DuBois and a Bears' miscue put the Garnet ahead 26-25. Ursinus went on to tie the score once more before Wallace's kill closed out the set 28-26 in Swarthmore's favor.
The teams continued point-for-point play in the early part of the second set with five tied scores. Swarthmore went on a three-point run on Heppe's service to take a 10-7 lead and later had a five-point run on Wallace's service to regain momentum. Scott led the attack with four kills in the set and a big swing from Liu closed out the second set on a 25-16 score.
Back-to-back kills from Ursinus' Allison Raff put the visitors ahead 4-1 to open the final set before Swarthmore went on a five-point run led by freshman
Olivia Leventhal with two kills. Ahead 6-4, the Garnet saw its next three of five points from Scott for an 11-8 lead. A service from DuBois resulted in a seven-point run for the Garnet en route to a 25-15 set victory.
Leah Masiello led Ursinus with 18 digs, while Sam Murphy and Taylor McCartney each recorded nine kills in the match.
Swarthmore will compete at the Richard Stockton (20-3) tournament this coming weekend against Springfield (15-5), Kean (11-11) and New Paltz (20-4).
