Late Offense Leads Baseball to a 10-6 Comeback Victory Over Shoremen

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team (18-7, 6-1 CC) once again relied on its clutch offense on Tuesday, powering to a comeback 10-6 victory over the Washington College Shoremen (12-14, 3-4 CC) at Clothier Field in Centennial Conference action. The win was the Garnet's third in a row and 15th in its last 17 games.

The offense was led by sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and three RBIs; sophomore designated hitter Scoop Ruxin, who matched Rizzo's hit total with a pair of RBIs; and junior first baseman Nicko Burnett, who drove in two runs on two hits.

The game was a scoreless tie through three full innings, as senior starter Ramsey Walker worked in and out of trouble without any damage. Washington broke through first, however, scoring four times in the top of the fourth on a home run and a two-out double.

Swarthmore fought back in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead in half on Ruxin's RBI double and a run-scoring single from junior second baseman Nick Constantino. The Shoremen tacked on one more in the top of the fifth before Rizzo's two-run homer brought the score to 5-4.

After Washington scored once more, the game remained 6-4 until the bottom of the eighth, when the Garnet bats exploded for six runs to take a commanding lead. Senior right fielder Tim Kwilos' bases-loaded hit by pitch cut the Swarthmore disadvantage to one; Burnett's subsequent two run single gave the Garnet the lead for the first time all afternoon. A double from Rizzo, sac fly from Ruxin, and an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Danny McMahon capped the onslaught, as the inning ended with Swarthmore up 10-6.

Freshman Nathan Booth, who pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Walker, earned the win; junior Matt Bertuch recorded the save by corralling the final out of the game with runners on the corners.

Swarthmore will play a non-conference game tomorrow against DeSales at Clothier Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
