Softball Takes Two From Eastern, 6-0 and 10-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A four-hit day from sophomore Chelsea Matzko and strong pitching powered the Swarthmore College softball team to a sweep of visiting Eastern on a warm Tuesday afternoon. The Garnet (16-10) won the first game 6-0 and the second game 10-4.

Matzko pounded out four hits on the day, including a double in each game and three RBI. Juniors Jesslyn Lammerts and Rose Pitkin added extra-base hits in the first contest while senior Danielle Seltzer finished with three hits. Sophomore Emma Madarasz led the offense in the second game with two singles.

Swarthmore also got strong performances in the circle, as both junior Melissa O'Connor and junior Sarina Lowe tossed complete games. O'Connor allowed just four hits and struck out five in the first game while Lowe allowed just six hits and no earned runs in the second.

The Garnet bats jumped on the Eagles (7-17) early in the first game, posting four runs in the first inning. Two-out singles from Seltzer, freshman Suness Jones and Matzko along with an Eastern error pushed four Garnet runners across home plate to make it 4-0.

With O'Connor cruising, that was all the runs Swarthmore needed. Doubles from Pitkin and Lammerts in the fifth and sixth innings respectively set up two Garnet insurance runs to close out the 6-0 win.

In the second game, Swarthmore only recorded five hits, but took advantage of costly Eastern miscues to score 10 runs. The Garnet itself struggled in the field, committing five errors, but Lowe was able to keep her composure throughout and limit the Eagles to just four runs.

Freshman Clara Obstfeld, Jones and Matzko all drove in runs for Swarthmore in the second game. With the score tied 2-2 after the first inning, the Garnet took complete control of the game thanks to a five-run second inning that was aided by a lead-off double from Matzko and two Eastern errors. Swarthmore benefited greatly from the wildness of Eastern starting pitcher Kasey Williams, who walked 10 and threw seven wild pitches.

Swarthmore remains out of conference and travels to Arcadia on Thursday.
