New Jersey – The Swarthmore College women's track and field team set school and personal best marks over the weekend at both the Sam Howell Invitational (Princeton) and the Osprey Open (Richard Stockton).
At the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton University on Friday, senior Rebecca Hammond competed amongst Division I athletes in the 1,500-meter run for a record-breaking finish. She broke Cait Mullarkey's '09 school record, finishing 4:36.48 for 11th place overall. Senior Becky Painter also competed at the meet, finishing at 18:12.07 in the 5,000-meter event. Both finishes met the ECAC Division III qualifying mark.
At the Osprey Open, junior Osazenoriuwa Ebose posted a new program record - previously her own best mark set in 2012 - in the shot put event with a 12.13 meter (39' 9.75") throw good for second place overall at the meet. The toss surpasses the ECAC Division III qualifying mark as well. Ebose also competed in the discus (30.57m, 100' 3") and javelin (26.47m, 86' 10") finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.
Junior Katie Lytle brought her basketball skills to the field, securing an eighth-place finish in the javelin throw with a 26.73 meter (87' 8") mark in her outdoor debut.
On the track, the Garnet light up the 400 meter finishing line with four in the top-10 – freshman Katie McMenamin (4th 1:00.77), sophomore Julia Nee (5th, 1:01.00), freshman Katie Lin (7th, 1:01.77) and freshman Sarah Nielsen (9th, 1:02.90). This group also ran together in the 4x400-meter, clocking 4:12.48 for fourth place.
Nee set a season-best 27.16 in the 200-meter, while sophomore Liz Tawa (5:04.74) and senior Emma Saarel (5:08.81) notched top-10 finishes in the 1,500-meter.
The Garnet return to action Saturday, April 13 at the Moravian Invitational beginning at 10:00 a.m.
