Offense Carries Baseball to Sweep of Gettysburg, 13-10 and 14-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Highlighted by a dramatic, eight-run comeback in Game 1, the Swarthmore College baseball team (17-7, 5-1) put on an offensive clinic on Saturday, rebounding from its first Conference loss on Friday to sweep the Gettysburg Bullets by scores of 13-10 and 14-3 at Clothier Field.

Naturally, offensive heroes were in heavy supply for the Garnet. Junior second baseman Nick Constantino earned six hits over the course of the doubleheader, driving in three runs in the first game; sophomore designated hitter Scoop Ruxin picked up five hits; junior first baseman Nicko Burnett drove in four runs, two in each game; and junior third baseman Cody Ruben and senior right fielder Tim Kwilos both drove in three.  Senior outfielder Rory McTear picked up three RBIs in Game 1, and sophomore outfielder Zach Powell did the same in the second game.  Sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo went 3-for-3 in Game 2, and was hit by three pitches in the same game.

Swarthmore was down for the count early in the afternoon, as Gettysburg took an 8-0 lead in the third inning of Game 1 and appeared to be headed for a blowout win.

However, the Garnet began chipping away at the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the third on Ruben's RBI single and Burnett's sac fly, and three times in the fourth courtesy of RBI hits by Kwilos and Ruben.

With the score 8-5, Swarthmore nearly let the game get out of hand once again, as Gettysburg managed to push across runs in the 6th and 7th to increase their lead to five, but the Garnet battled back in the 7th with four runs on hits by Constantino, McTear, and sophomore shortstop Danny McMahon.

In the eighth, with Swarthmore still down by a run, Burnett homered for the second time this season to tie the game at 10.  His teammates made sure that his late-innings heroics wouldn't be in vain, as sophomore left fielder Trevor Shepherd put the Garnet on top with an RBI single, and Constantino expanded the lead with a two-run double.

Freshman relief pitcher Nathan Booth came on in the fourth to stop the bleeding, pitching capably for three innings to the tune of one run on five hits; junior Matt Bertuch picked up the win by throwing the last three innings, surrendering one run on four hits.

Game 2 was a far less stressful win for Swarthmore, as the team was ahead 7-2 by the end of the fifth and would only increase its lead from there.

The Garnet did the brunt of its damage in the sixth, scoring seven times on eight hits.  Rizzo started the inning with a double and scored on McMahon's single.  Shepherd, Kwilos, and Powell all singled in individual runs to give the Garnet an 11-2 lead before Burnett's two-run double stretched the advantage to double-digits.  Ruxin's RBI single capped the scoring in the inning and in the game for Swarthmore.

Freshman starter Oscar Leong pitched well in the victory, throwing six innings and surrendering three runs, only one of which was earned.  Senior Sean Mangus and sophomore Samer Nashed each pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief.

The Garnet will hope to expand on its Centennial Conference success on Tuesday, taking on Washington College at home.  First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
