Baseball Drops First Centennial Game to Haverford, 5-0

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The bats of the Swarthmore College baseball team (15-7, 1-3) were stymied by Haverford starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans, who struck out 12 Garnet batters and allowed just one hit to give the Fords a 5-0 win on Friday afternoon.

The loss is Swarthmore's first in Centennial Conference play this season and snaps the Garnet's seven-game winning streak.

Sophomore Scoop Ruxin picked up the Garnet's only hit of the game in the second inning.

Despite taking the loss, freshman starting pitcher Joe Warren threw well for Swarthmore, allowing just two hits over seven innings with three strikeouts.

The Fords scored a first-inning run to take an early 1-0 lead, but the story of the game was the pitchers. With Warren and Bergjans both dealing, the score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning. After each team went five innings without recording a hit, the Fords' bats finally came to life in the eighth. With two runners on, Haverford's Nick Miranda smacked a double to the gap off of reliever Sean Mangus to put the Fords on top 3-0. Back-to-back singles from Casey Fox and Alex Hudak and two Swarthmore errors quickly made it a 5-0 game.

In the ninth, the Garnet bats still had no answer for the Fords' pitching, as reliever Patrick Falkoff retired Swarthmore in order to seal the win.

Swarthmore returns home to host Gettysburg on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m
