Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Playing in its final regular season games of the 2013 season, the Swarthmore College softball team (19-19, 3-13) dropped a pair of games to Centennial rival Ursinus on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took the first game by a score of 2-0 and the second game 9-1.

In the first game, the Garnet out-hit the Bears 8-5 but could not convert on its opportunities. Senior Erin Curtis and sophomore Chelsea Matzko each finished with a pair of hits, while junior Melissa O'Connor pitched an effective six innings, allowing just five hits and two earn runs.

The second game was all Ursinus, as the Bears scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 9-1 in five innings. Matzko again led the Swarthmore offense, belting two doubles in the second game.

Senior Kate Smayda picked up one hit in each game, bringing her career total to 161 following the regular season, four shy of the program record.

The Bears made the most of their five hits off O'Connor to win the first game. Ursinus scored in the first inning on a sac fly from Caitlin Whelan to make it 1-0 and added another run in the sixth following a single from Delia Mercuri.

Swarthmore made it very interesting in the bottom of the seventh. A single from Curtis and a pair of Bear errors loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately for Swat, senior Danielle Seltzer flied out to end the game. In all, Swarthmore stranded 10 runners on base.

In the second game, Ursinus clubbed five extra-base hits en route to the 9-1 win. Whelan, Emelie McFarland, Amy Gentile, Zoe Heinke and Kelly Schymanski all finished with extra-base hits for the Bears, who scored four in the first, two in the second and three more in the fourth for the win. Junior Sarina Lowe took the loss on the mound while freshman Christen Boas Hayes worked two innings of relief.

Junior Rose Pitkin and freshman Clara Obstfeld added singles in the first game. Senior Samantha Bennett and Smayda each swiped a base.

Swarthmore will now await word on a possible ECAC bid.
