No. 10 Washington College Defeats Men's Lacrosse 16-5

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - No. 10 Washington College proved too much for the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team in its home finale, as the Shoremen used scoring runs in the second and fourth quarters to defeat the Garnet 16-5 on Wednesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Senior Steve Selverian scored three goals and added an assist to lead Swarthmore (4-10, 1-6). Freshmen Braeden DeWan and Mac Maguire added the Garnet's other goals. In goal, junior Jonathan Cohen played well despite facing constant pressure, making a career-high 21 saves and picking up eight ground balls.

For the Shoremen (12-3, 4-3), JD Campbell and Jim Cusick each finished with three goals while Bennett Cord and Matt Lewis each added a pair. Michael Trapp set the tone for the game with 19 face-off wins. He also picked up 12 ground balls and scored a goal.

Washington pulled away from the Garnet thanks to a 7-0 scoring run in the fist half and a 5-0 run late in the second half.

A goal from Selverian off an excellent assist from sophomore Ian Lukaszewicz at the 7:14 mark of the first quarter tied the game 1-1. While Swarthmore played the Shoremen toe-to-toe in the opening 10 minutes, Washington turned the corner late in the first quarter, scoring three goals to make it a 4-1 game. 

The game remained 4-1 until midway through the second period. Starting with a goal from Campbell at 7:03, the Shoremen went on a lightning-quick 4-0 run over the next three minutes to make it an 8-1 contest. Swarthmore scored the final three goals of the half - one each from DeWan, Maguire and Selverian - to cut the deficit to 8-4 at the half.

Washington out-scored Swarthmore 2-0 in the third period and put the game away in the fourth. The Shoremen used another lightning-quick run to start the fourth quarter  - this time scoring four goals in a little over one minute - to put the game on ice.

Lukaszewicz finished with two assists for Swarthmore. Freshman Jimmy Gastner and junior Zach Schaffer each caused two turnovers.

Swarthmore closes out the 2013 season on Saturday at Haverford.
