Big Hits Lead Baseball Past Ursinus, 5-2

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Solid pitching from freshman Joe Warren and a big day at the plate for senior right fielder Tim Kwilos led the Swarthmore College baseball team (21-14, 9-6 CC) on Tuesday, as the Garnet kept its playoff hopes alive with a 5-2 victory over the Ursinus Bears (6-25, 2-13 CC).

Warren allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings to earn the win. Kwilos, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, was one of five Garnet batters with at least two hits; sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo, sophomore shortstop Danny McMahon, junior third baseman Cody Ruben, and sophomore left fielder Brian Kaissi picked up a pair each.

Ursinus scored a run in the first, but Warren worked out of a two-on, one-out jam to limit the damage. The Garnet bats were relatively quiet until the fourth, when RBI singles by Ruben and Kwilos gave Swarthmore the 2-1 lead. Single runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth on hits by McMahon, Kwilos, and sophomore centerfielder Trevor Shepherd were more than enough to seal the crucial victory.

Junior Matt Bertuch inherited a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning, but earned the save with a scoreless inning and a third.

The Garnet will host Ursinus on Friday, as Senior Day ceremonies will precede the final home Conference game of the season. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
