Rutgers-Camden Tops Swat Baseball, 7-3

Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J. - Playing under the lights and under the shadow of the Ben Franklin Bridge, the Swarthmore College baseball team (20-14) suffered a 7-3 loss to host Rutgers-Camden (19-17) on Monday evening from Campbell's Field.

Senior Sean Bryant and sophomore Brian Kaissi led the Garnet offense, each finishing the game with two hits and a stolen base. Junior Nicko Burnett, sophomore Joe Rizzo and freshman Jack Harnett all drilled doubles for Swarthmore.

John Santilli led the Scarlet Raptors with three hits, including two RBI and a sixth-inning triple.

The Garnet got on the scoreboard first, scoring just two batters into the game. After Tim Kwilos earned a lead-off hit-by-pitch, Burnett doubled to the gap to drive him home, making it 1-0 Swarthmore.

With sophomore Dylan Jeffers on the mound, the Garnet held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning. In that inning, the Scarlet Raptors got their first runs of the game on a two-out- two-RBI double from Adrian Gonzalez to jump ahead 2-1.

That inning was just the start for Rutgers-Camden, as the Raptors scored in each of the next four innings to build a significant lead. The Garnet was able to score a run in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single from Kaissi, but still trailed 6-2 following six innings.

Swat added an additional run in the top of the seventh inning on Harnett's RBI double to right field, but it wasn't enough to mount a serious rally, as Rutgers-Camden finished off the 7-3 win.

Jeffers pitched six innings and took the loss for Swarthmore, allowing four earned runs while striking out two. Sophomore Samer Nashed tossed two innings of relief. Four Scarlet Raptors took to the mound, with starter Jim Turner picking up the victory.

Swarthmore continues its push for a Centennial Conference playoff spot when it travels to Ursinus on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3:30.
