CHESTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's track and field team were back in over the weekend, competing at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton on Friday and the two-day Widener Invitational.
At the Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday, senior Rebecca Hammond ran in the 1,500-meter elite group, which including entries from Division I schools. She finished 15th overall at 4:32.52, setting a new school record by ousting her previous record mark by nearly four seconds.
Widener Invitational - Day 1
Senior Emma Saarel took first place in the 10,000 meter run with a 41:12.14 mark. Sophomore Zoe Cina-Sklar – running in her first 10k - finished second in the event at 41:42.60. Freshman Sophia Frantz wrapped up the 5,000 meter run in 20:59.67.
In the field at Widener, sophomore Osazenoriuwa Ebose took second in the shot put with a 13.08 meter (42' 11.00") mark and covering 38.16 meters (125' 2.00") with the discus for another second-place finish. Mia Ferguson gathered marks in the shot put (7.87 m, 25' 10.00") and in the discus (19.39 m, 63' 7.00").
Widener Invitational – Day 2
Collecting season-bests and ECAC qualifying marks, Hammond (2:14.64) and freshman Katie McMenamin (2:17.14) finished first and third, respectively in the 800-meter run.
The legs of Hammond, freshman Katie Lin, sophomore Julia Nee and McMenamin, the 4x400 relay squad finished at 4:07.68 for third overall and met ECAC standards. In the 4x100 relay, Lin and Nee joined Amy Amuquandoh and Helen Thum for a 52.97 finish for eighth.
In the 1,500-meter event, three Garnet runners finished in the top-15, including personal best times from Sarah Nielsen (4:54.99, 9th) and Liz Tawa (5:01.17, 13th). Senior Becky Painter finished 11th overall clocking in at 4:58.04.
For the sprints, Nee notched 27.01 (200m) and 1:00.72 (400m) times, Lin ran 1:01.54 (200m), Amuquandoh finished 28.67 (200m) and 1:04.86 (400m), and Thum clocked 14.79 (100m) and 30.98 (200m).
In the field, freshman Shaina Lu came close to matching her season-best mark in the pole vault with a 2.50 meter (8' 2.5") launch. Nee – a multi event competitor – collected a season-best 1.35 meter (4' 5.00") high jump finish.
Swarthmore will next compete at the coveted Penn Relays next week
