Haverford Takes Two From Softball on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Despite a great performance from the circle by junior Sarina Lowe in the second game the Swarthmore College softball team was unable to gain a split against Haverford College on the Garnet's senior day. Swarthmore (18-16, 3-11) fell in the first game 10-0 and was on the losing end of the nightcap by a 3-2 score against the Fords (20-11, 8-6).

The first game of the double header saw Haverford hitting the ball all over the field early. In the second inning the Fords got two home runs and scored seven runs total to break the game open. Freshman pitcher Christen Boas Hayes came into the game after the second homer and quieted the scoring streak, but the damage was done. Swarthmore was not able to produce any runs and only sophomore Chelsea Matzko and freshman Clara Obstfeld were able to record hits in the five-inning game.

The bats of the Fords were much quieter in the second game when facing Lowe and her excellent display of pitches. After junior Nicole Aaron reached first Obstfeld stepped up to the plate and made contact with a hit down the right field line. After a poor throw from third to first Obstfeld was safe and Aaron was able to make her way all the way home after yet another poor throw by the Fords from first to home. Lowe's curve ball continued to keep Haverford on their heels and in the bottom of the fifth freshman Suness Jones was able to get a hit sending sophomore Laurie Sellers home and giving the Garnet a 2-0 lead.

Errors in the late innings continued to haunt the Garnet and its bid for a split on the day. After a fielding error that allowed freshman Kristin Tatum to reach first in the top of the sixth, junior Gabrielle Sapienza stepped up and hit a bomb over the fence in center field to knot the score.

Swarthmore was not able to respond in the bottom of the inning and went into the final frame all tied up with two runs apiece. Again, an error in the field allowed Haverford to get a runner on base and junior Jen DiCandilo was able to drive the runner home to gain the lead and eventual game-winner as the Garnet bats were held silent in the bottom of the seventh.

In between games, the seniors of the Swarthmore softball team were honored for their great careers wearing the garnet and white. Seniors Samantha Bennett, Erin Curtis, Danielle Seltzer and Kate Smayda – playing in their final regular season home games - were applauded by friends and family before the freshmen serenaded them with song and dance, as is the team tradition.

The Garnet will hit the road for its last six games of the regular season, beginning on Tuesday, April 23 at Immaculata.
