CHESTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's track and field team competed at two meets over the weekend at both the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton and the two-day Widener Invitational.
On Friday at Larry Ellis, senior Jacob Phillips represented the Garnet in the 5,000-meter run among 102 entries. Phillips paced a 15:06.19 finish for a season-best mark.
Widener Invitational – Day One
On Friday, freshman Jorin Schug clocked 16:42.72 (5,000 meter), Travis Mattingly compiled an 11.56 meter triple jump and senior Eric Verhasselt covered 26.68 meters with the discus.
Widener Invitational – Day Two
On the track, Erick White broke into the program's top-10 performance list with a 1:56.79 finish in the 800-meter, placing 14th overall. Jonas Oppenhiemer clocked in at 3:59.03 for an ECAC qualifying mark and top-20 finish in the 1,500-meter run.
For the hurdlers, sophomore Jason Heo notched finishing times of 17.00 (110 hurdles, 7th) and 58.96 (400 hurdles, 10th), while Verhassalt took a 20.16 mark in the 110 hurdles and Mattingly finished at 1:01.32 in the 400 hurdles.
The relays put together strong performances as senior Matthew Heck, Heo, Martinez, and Vaughan-Ogunlusi clocked a fifth-place finish in the 4x100 at 44.63. The second squad of sophomore Josh Gregory, sophomore Zach Kronstat, junior Gavin Fahey and senior Aaron Moser clocked in at 47.68 for eighth place overall. The 4x400 relay of Heck, White, Martinez, Scott finished sixth with a 3:31.12 mark.
In the field, Martinez leaped 1.70 meters (5' 7.00") in the high jump for seventh place and Fahey gathered a 1.55 meter (5' 1.00") mark. For the long jump, Kronstat soared 5.61 meters (18' 5.00") and Fahey measured 5.29 meters (17' 1.25").
The Garnet return to action this coming week at the coveted Penn Relays.
