SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team (15-6, 3-0) extended its winning streak to seven games and put the rest of the Centennial Conference on notice by defeating No. 21/25 Haverford 9-7 on a cold and windy Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Field.
Swarthmore's offensive prowess was led by a two-hit, three-RBI afternoon from sophomore left fielder Trevor Shepherd. Junior third baseman Cody Ruben and senior right fielder Tim Kwilos each picked up three hits.
The win is just the Garnet's third over a nationally-ranked opponent and first since a doubleheader sweep of Johns Hopkins in 2011.
Haverford jumped out in front early, scoring in the first off of senior starter Ramsey Walker. Although the Garnet tied the game in the second on an RBI hit from Shepherd, the Fords answered with three runs in the third to put Swarthmore in a 4-1 hole.
In the fifth, however, Swarthmore's luck began to turn; the Garnet men scored six times, as an error, fielder's choice, a bases-loaded walk, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch allowed four runs to score before Shepherd's two-out, two-run double capped the inning at 7-4 for the home team.
Swarthmore tacked on additional runs in the next two innings, as sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the second inning in a row in the sixth and Ruben singled in the Garnet's ninth run in the seventh.
Haverford did not go down quietly, attempting a comeback late in the game; in the eighth, with Walker seemingly on cruise control since the fourth inning, Haverford's batters pushed three two-out runs across to close the gap to 9-7 before junior reliever Matt Bertuch came on to record the final out. Bertuch proceeded to pitch around a one-out single for a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Swarthmore will travel to rematch with the Fords on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
