Garnet Softball Rebounds to Split With Washington College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior Samantha Bennett knocked home what proved to be the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Swarthmore College softball team (18-14, 3-9) a 4-3 victory in the second game of its doubleheader with second-place Washington College (21-12, 9-5). Swarthmore almost earned the sweep on the warm Tuesday afternoon, but the homestanding Shorewomen won the first game 4-3 on a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Senior Danielle Seltzer continued her stellar senior season with a five-hit afternoon, picking up three hits in the first game and two in the second. Freshman Suness Jones led a late Garnet rally in the first game, hitting a two-run home run in the top of sixth inning that tied the game 3-3. Junior Rose Pitkin hit a two-RBI double in the second game as part of a three-hit day. Sophomore Chelsea Matzko and freshman Clara Obstfeld finished with extra-base hits in the first game.

Starters Melissa O'Connor and Sarina Lowe both threw well in the circle. Lowe got the win in game two, allowing just three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. O'Connor got the loss in the first game, striking out five.

Suzanne Patinella hit home runs in each game to lead the Shorewomen's offense.

In the first game, Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead following runs in each of the first two innings. In the top of the third, the Garnet got on the board thanks to an RBI single from senior Kate Smayda.

The Shorewomen added another run in the top of the fifth on  a sac fly, making it 3-1 before Swat made its late rally. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Jones belted a two-run homer, scoring sophomore Emma Madarasz to make it 3-3.

But it was not to be for a snake-bitten Garnet squad that has now lost three Centennial games by one run this season. Washington used a one-out sac fly to left field to score the game-winning run.

In the second game, Swarthmore wasted no time, jumping on the Shorewomen for three first-inning runs.Seltzer knocked in one of the runs while Pitkin plated two on a double to left-center.

The Swat lead did not last long, however; Patinella hit her second homer of the day in the second inning, this time a three-run blast to tie the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bennett came through in the clutch, hitting a two-out single up the middle to give Swarthmore a 4-3 lead.

That was all the cushion that Lowe needed. She held the Washingon College bats silent over the final four innings to give the Garnet the much-needed win.

Swarthmore gets the rest of the week off and returns home to host Haverford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
