Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - It was a tough day on the diamond for the Swarthmore College baseball team (18-11, 6-4), as homestanding Washington College scored 15 unanswered runs to defeat the Garnet by a score of 16-4 on Sunday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
Sophomore designated hitter Scoop Ruxin led the offense, going three-for-three. Senior right fielder Tim Kwilos picked up two hits. Sophomore Joe Rizzo clubbed a double in the second inning for Swat's only extra-base hit.
The Garnet went up early, scoring four times in the first two innings. Swarthmore got two in on bases-loaded walks in the first, while Rizzo's double and an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Danny McMahon pushed two more runs across the plate.
However, the Shoremen scored four times in the second, three times in the fifth, and broke the game open with six in the seventh.
Nick Marinelli led the Shoremen with five hits, including two doubles and four RBI. Sean Connole picked up four hits and four RBI while Ian Remington and Garrett Richardello both belted extra-base hits as part of the Shoremen's 18-hit day. Bryan Baquer also added two hits and two steals
Freshman Joe Warren (1-2) took the loss for the Garnet, struggling in 1.1 innings of work. Sean Mangus, Nathan Booth and Samer Nashed worked in relief for the Garnet. Michael Long worked 5.1 innings of relief after Swat roughed up starter Ben Cameron to get the win for Washington College.
Swarthmore looks to get back in the win column tomorrow as it faces Gwynedd-Mercy at home. First pitch is set for 4pm.
