Box Score 2 CARLISLE, Pa. - Homestanding Dickinson (13-17, 4-6) won a pair of tight games over the Swarthmore College softball team (17-13, 2-8) on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Red Devils used a three-run first inning to win the first game by a score of 4-2 and a late-game home run to win the second contest 4-3.
Senior Kate Smayda finished the doubleheader with three hits, including a double in the first game. Freshman Suness Jones led the Garnet offense in the second game, recording two hits, including a two-RBI triple in the top of the sixth inning.
Despite pitching well, junior Melissa O'Connor (10-5) took the loss in both games, striking out six over 12 innings.
In the first game, Swarthmore struck first, as senior Danielle Seltzer's RBI single pushed Smayda across home plate to make it 1-0. The lead would not last for long, however; the Red Devils repsonded with three runs in the bottom half of the first. RBI singles from Denise Haines, Nicole Piet and Carly Jordan put Dickinson in front 3-1.
The Red Devils added another run in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead 4-1, a lead that would last until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Swat made a late push. After a leadoff double, Smayda scored following a stolen base and error on the Dickinson catcher, cutting the lead to 4-2. Unfortunantly for the Garnet, it would get no closer, as the Red Devils closed out the 4-2 win.
The second game was another close affair, with the Red Devils this time using some late-game dramatics to earn the win.
Down 3-1 in the sixth inning, Swarthmore tied the game behind some big hits. With runners at first and second with one out, Jones ripped a triple down the line. It scored just one run however; Seltzer was thrown at home on a close play. Jones was knocked home batter later on an RBI single from Chelsea Matzko to even the score at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sxith, Dickinson took the lead for good on a lead-off, first-pitch home run by Grace Edelson, making it a 4-3 game.
Junior Rose Pitkin added a double in the first game. Freshman Emma Madarasz singled in the second game.
Swarthmore continues Centennial Conference play on Tuesday at Washington College.
