Baseball Falls to Drew, 8-1, In Home-Opener

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team (0-2) struggled to find its footing on Wednesday, as the home opener against the Drew University Rangers (3-0) ended in an 8-1 loss.

Senior centerfielder Rory McTear was the sole Garnet batter with more than one hit, as he finished the day 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

Looking grime early, a pair of errors put Swarthmore in a 2-0 hole before the Garnet had a chance to bat.  However, down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Garnet appeared to be staging a rally as they loaded the bases with no outs.  Consecutive singles by seniors Sean Bryant, Tim Kwilos, and McTear put Swarthmore in prime position for a big inning, but a sac fly from sophomore catcher Joe Rizzo was all the Garnet could muster before the frame ended.

Drew went on to score three more in the fifth and a pair in the eighth to open a seven-run lead before the game was called on account of darkness after eight innings.

Sophomore starter Dylan Jeffers took the loss, going four innings and allowing three runs, although just one was earned.

Junior Ken Myers managed the win for the Rangers in six innings pitched, allowing six hits and one earned run.

The Garnet travel to Winter Haven, Florida in a nine-game slate over spring break beginning on Saturday, March 9th with a double-header against Pittsburgh-Greensburg.
