Baseball Sweeps Dickinson in Centennial Opener, 5-1 and 13-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team kicked off the Centennial Conference season on a high note on Saturday, sweeping the Dickinson Red Devils by scores of 5-1 and 13-4 at Clothier Field.

With the wins, the Garnet (13-6, 2-0) extends its season-long winning streak to five games.

Sophomores Danny McMahon and Luke Alventosa did the brunt of the damage in Game 1; McMahon, playing shortstop, drove in three runs to lead the Garnet offense, while Alventosa pitched seven innings allowing just one unearned run.  Junior first baseman Nicko Burnett also picked up three hits in the first game, while senior right fielder Tim Kwilos earned two.

In Game 2, junior second baseman Nick Constantino drove in three runs, while senior centerfielder Rory McTear contributed three hits and 2 RBIs. Kwilos and junior third baseman Cody Ruben each picked up a pair of hits.

Swarthmore was down early in Game 1, as the Red Devils appeared to have Alventosa on the ropes; while they managed to push across just one run, Dickinson left the bases loaded in each of the first two innings and stranded eight through three.

The Garnet broke through in the fourth, however, when a bases-loaded balk and a  two-run single by McMahon put Swarthmore up 3-1.

The Garnet would tack on runs in the 7th and 8th on singles by McMahon and Kwilos to run the score to 5-1, and junior reliever Matt Bertuch threw two scoreless frames to seal the win.

In Game 2, Swarthmore once again found itself down early, as Dickinson scored two in the second off of freshman starter Oscar Leong.  However, Kwilos' RBI double put the Garnet on the board in the 3rd, and Constantino's two-out, two-base hit helped the Garnet take a 4-1 lead in the 4th.

The team kept expanding on its lead while keeping Dickinson at bay, adding two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and exploding for five in the eighth, with McTear, Constantino, and senior designated hitter Sean Bryant picking up RBIs in the inning.

Leong earned the win, allowing two runs and striking out five in five innings.  Senior Sean Mangus pitched effectively in relief, allowing just a pair of unearned ninth inning runs.

Swarthmore returns to action on Monday, facing Keuka College at Clothier Field.  Action is set to begin at 3:30.
