Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Visiting Gettysburg (11-9, 3-1) used timely hitting and strong pitching to earn a Centennial Conference doubleheader sweep of the Swarthmore College softball team (11-7, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon from the College. The Bullets took the first game 2-0 and the second 5-2.
Senior Danielle Seltzer continued her strong 2013 season with three hits in the doubleheader, including a double and single in the second game. Senior Kate Smayda also added two hits in game two. Freshman Clara Obstfeld knocked in a run in the second game.
Junior Melissa O'Connor (6-3) threw well in two solid outings. She struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in game one and surrendered just one earned run in four innings of relief work in the second game. Junior Sarina Lowe got the start in game two, tossing three innings.
Gettysburg freshman Steph Zengel showed why she's already one of the top hitters in the Centennial Conference, finishing the afternoon with three hits and three RBI. She knocked in both of Bullets' late-game runs in the first contest.
The first game was a pitcher's duel, with O'Connor and the Bullets' Lindsey Treanor trading scoreless innings. The Bullets broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out single to centerfield to make it 1-0 Gettysburg.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Swarthmore got a runner into scoring position but could not capitalize. Sophomore Laurie Sellars reached second base with one out, but a pair of ground outs ended the inning.
The Bullets added an insurance run in the top of seventh on a Zengel RBI and closed out the game in the bottom of the inning.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but Swarthmore was able to answer back the next inning. Obstfeld knocked in a run on a solid single to centerfield and the Garnet tacked on another run on the play when an errand throw by the Gettysburg outfielder skipped through the dugout fence.
Unfortunantly for Swarthmore, the Bullets answered right back, scoring two runs on four hits in the third to go back on top 4-2. Gettysburg added one more run in the seventh to seal the 5-2 win.
Swarthmore continues its home stand on Tuesday when it hosts defending Centennial champ McDaniel. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
